2018 Season

2018 was the LCSO's sixth season of presenting concerts. Our gala format offered musical treats for all tastes with short works or excerpts from longer ones. The featured artists came from our considerable fund of talented local musicians and included Piccolo Soloist Kinta Wilson, Solo Violinist Ivan Skawronski and Solo Sopranos Vivienne Dowling and Amy Williams. The Symphonic Chorus is always a popular feature of our concerts and their enthusiastic contribution to the year’s program did not disappoint.

To encourage and promote Australian composers we presented three new works in the season: Chris Waite’s work “That’s Where Light Enters You” written in 2017 to be accompanied by projected images of the Aurora Australis. The photos and video clips seen were captured by local photographers and edited by Warrnambool photographer Gill Fry to synchronize with, and enhance Chris’ music.

The LCSO also played three movements from the “Cantata – The Day is Ended” written by Kenneth Stott of Warrnambool. By turns reverent, uplifting and exultant, this work features solo sopranos and the Symphonic Chorus.

The third of the new composers is LCSO viola player Michael Lofting, who writes and plays music in Adelaide, but is a frequent visitor to Mount Gambier in his role as a management consultant. Michael’s delightful piece “Voyage Home” is a programmatic work describing an eventful journey by sailing ship towards the home shore.

Add to these highlights familiar and favourite works by Handel, Verdi, Wagner, Sartori, Tchaikovsky and Smetana and together form a wonderful spectrum of music in season 2018.
